Ayala tabbed Southland Conference Player of the Week for third time this spring

FRISCO — Sophomore Martin Ayala was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week for the third time this spring, the league office announced on Tuesday. In fact, it is the Quito, Ecuador, native's third award in the first month of the season.

Ayala guided the Roadrunners to a pair of victories to open the Southland campaign last weekend.

He recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win agaiinst Lamar's Robert Lee at No. 1 singles on Saturday and also teamed up with senior Daniel Moreiras to defeat Denis Ermilov and Dusan Savkovic, 8-7 (10-4) at the top doubles position. He then notched his fourth consecutive straight-sets victory the next day when he topped Nicholls' Damjan Despotovski, 6-4, 6-1.

Ayala owns a league-best 7-2 mark this spring, all at the top singles spot. He also has registered a 5-3 record at the No. 1 doubles spot.

UTSA (5-4) will return to action on Saturday at SMU (3-4).
