Roadrunners split Saturday doubleheader with Saint Joseph's

SAN ANTONIO — Senior Taylor Walton hurled six scoreless innings and junior Cody Scott fired three more to complete a combined shutout in a 6-0 victory against Saint Joseph's in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader at Wolff Stadium. UTSA improved to 3-4 on the season.

Meanwhile, the Hawks (4-3) received a seven-inning shutout from Kyle Mullen in a 3-0 win in the opener.

Walton (2-0) scattered four hits and struck out five, while Scott picked up his first save as a Roadrunner after giving up a pair of hits and fanning two.

Sophomore Daniel Rockett led the Roadrunners' offense with a 3-for-7 performance in the doubleheader. Junior Matthew James and sophomore Jake Wood each tallied a pair of hits, including a double, and freshman Mike Warren drove in a pair of runs.

Game 2: UTSA 6, Saint Joseph's 0

SAN ANTONIO — Senior right-hander Taylor Walton set the tone for UTSA (3-4) in the nightcap of Saturday's twinbill, working quickly and efficiently on the mound. The Midland native threw 99 pitches, 62 for strikes, and struck a season-high five batters.

Junior Cody Scott came on in the seventh to record a three-inning save. The Amarillo native allowed just one runner to reach second base and notched a pair of strikeouts.

The Roadrunners plated a trio of runs in the second and it was all the offense they would need.

After sophomore Jake Wood opened the inning with a walk, junior Matthew James reached on a throwing error during a sacrifice bunt attempt. Freshman Mike Warren then laid down a suicide-squeeze bunt, which turned into an error, allowing Wood to score. Two batters later, the Roadrunners pulled off another suicide-squeeze play with similar results. Redshirt freshman RJ Perucki laid down the bunt and reached on a throwing error. James scored on the play, giving UTSA a 2-0 advantage. Freshman Riley Good followed with a sacrifice fly to center, which drove in junior Casey Selsor.

The Roadrunners added a run in the sixth and two more a frame later to earn their first win of the series.

Six UTSA players registered a hit in the contest, including Wood, who also scored a pair of runs. Warren drove in a pair of runs.

Bryan Penalo (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on three hits in five innings of work. He registered three strikeouts.

The series concludes at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Game 1: Saint Joseph's 3, UTSA 0 (7 innings)

SAN ANTONIO — Saint Joseph's plated three runs in the third off junior starting pitcher Casey Selsor in Saturdey's opener and the Hawks (4-2) made it last for a 3-0, seven-inning victory.

The top of the Hawks' order started the decisive inning.

Brett Tiagwad drew a walk before Kevin Kratochwill singled. Greg Kumpel followed with an infield single to load the bases. Kevin Taylor then pushed across the first run with a single and Selsor issued a free pass to Quinn Renner to give Saint Joseph's a 2-0 lead. Mike Muha's chopper was fielded by Selsor on the next play, but a high throw to the plate allowed Kumpel to score.

The three runs were more than enough for Kyle Mullen (2-0), who yielded six hits, walked three and struck out three in the shutout.

Rockett managed a pair of hits to lead the Roadrunners (2-4) at the plate.

Selsor (0-2) took the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits and five walks in five panels. He had five strikeouts.
