UTSA unveils second recruiting class on Wednesday

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head football coach Larry Coker announced Wednesday that 28 highly-decorated student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to join his program for this fall's inaugural 2011 campaign.

The class consists of 26 prep student-athletes and two junior college transfers. Two signees — freshman Chris Johnson (San Antonio, Texas/East Central HS) and junior Brandon Reeves (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon HS/Pierce [Calif.] JC) — already have enrolled and currently are attending classes at UTSA.

The group is highlighted by nine all-state performers in Demetrius Jacobs (Brookshire, Texas/Royal HS), Joseph Lizcano (Schertz, Texas/Clemens HS), Josiah Monroe (Bastrop, Texas/Bastrop HS), David Morgan (Marble Falls, Texas/Marble Falls HS), Ryan Polite (DeSoto, Texas/DeSoto HS), Payton Rion (Bulverde, Texas/Smithson Valley HS), Alondre Thorn (Hutto, Texas/Hutto HS), Triston Wade (Tyler, Texas/John Tyler HS) and Josh Ward (Pleasanton, Texas/Pleasanton HS). Additionally, 25 players earned all-district honors in the state of Texas, including 10 who were selected to all-area teams during their high school careers.

Defense was the primary focus of the class with 15 players — nine defensive backs, three defensive linemen and a trio of linebackers — being brought in. Three running backs, two wide receivers, two tight ends, a pair of offensive linemen and one quarterback (Polite) comprise the 10 signees on offense, while two athletes — Kenny Harrison (Linden, Texas/Linden-Kildare HS) and Terrance Wilburn (San Marcos, Texas/San Marcos HS) — and a punter/placekicker (Ward) make up the remainder of the group.

The two junior college signees come from the same California school. Franky Anaya (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS/Pierce JC) joins Reeves, his teammate for the last two seasons, from the JUCO ranks. Anaya and Reeves will be juniors this fall and both will begin their UTSA careers on defense.

“We’re really excited about the quality, depth and versatility of this class,” Coker said. “This is a very athletic, talented and well-rounded group that has bought into the vision of UTSA Football. They want to join the current members of our team and help this program be successful from the start and we’re excited to have them on board.”

The class has a definite Texas flavor with 26 student-athletes hailing from the Lone Star State. Eight call the Greater San Antonio Area home, while there also are seven players from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, five from Greater Houston, four from Central Texas and two from East Texas.

“I’ve said this many times before, but the state of Texas is a hotbed for college football recruiting,” Coker said. “There are many, many good high school players throughout the state and the diversity we have in this class is a testament to that. All of our coaches did a great job of identifying and recruiting players all over the state. The quality of football in Texas is outstanding.”

Other members of this year's class include Kenny Bias (San Antonio, Texas/Stevens HS), Kristian Bryant (Spring, Texas/Klein Forest HS), Drew Douglas (Garland, Texas/Sachse HS), Jordan Gray (Fort Worth, Texas/Trimble Tech HS), Sean Hesler (Marion, Texas/Marion HS), Desmon Mathis (Brenham, Texas/Brenham HS), Jason Neill (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus HS), Mauricio Sanchez (San Antonio, Texas/Warren HS), Malcom Scott (Tomball, Texas/Tomball HS), Jake Smith (Denton, Texas/Guyer HS), Blake Terry (Denton, Texas/Guyer HS), Josh Walker (League City, Texas/Clear Springs HS), Tevin Williams (Euless, Texas/Trinity HS) and Troy Williams (San Antonio, Texas/Madison HS).

“It really has been a pleasure to recruit these players because we have met some outstanding young men and wonderful families,” Coker said. “The reception from the high school and junior college coaches we have met was unbelievable. We can't thank them enough for being so friendly and helpful during this process."

UTSA will hold its first official spring drills beginning Monday, March 7, and the inaugural spring game is scheduled to be played at the Alamodome at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 9. The Roadrunners then begin play as a Football Championship Subdivision Independent (FCS/formerly Division I-AA) this fall before moving to the Western Athletic Conference for the 2012 campaign.
