TUSCON, Ariz. — Led by freshman Ryan Werre's top-20 showing, the UTSA men’s golf team finished 13th at the season-opening Arizona Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at the Arizona National Golf Club (6,793 yards/par 71).
Werre finished the second round, which was continued Tuesday morning after being suspended due to darkness on Monday, with a one-over-par 72. He matched his opening-round 74 in the final 18 to finish in a five-way tie for 18th at seven-over 220.
The Roadrunners finished the 54-hole tournament with a 902 (303-295-304), just one stroke behind BYU for 12th and two shots back of UC Irvine for 11th. The 13th-place effort easily eclipsed last year's of 24th-place effort.
Sophomore Mitchell Griffin carded an even-par 71 in the second round but struggled to an 84 in the third to finish tied for 46th (228), while sophomore Nicko Dodd tied for 54th (231). Senior Lewis Chong was one shot behind Dodd in a tie for 58th (232) and sophomore Austin Struble tied for 79th (237).
No. 16 San Diego recorded an 859 (285-286-288) to capture the team title, while No. 45 Pepperdine, which was led by individual medalist Andrew Putnam (206), was eight strokes back in second (867).
UTSA returns to action in two week when it hosts the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational. The two-day tournament tees off on Monday, Feb. 14.
