Louisiana-Monroe edges UTSA in season opener, 3-2

MONROE, La. — Joey Cesario's infield single with the bases loaded in the ninth gave Louisiana-Monroe a 3-2 walk-off victory against UTSA on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

The Warhawks loaded the bases in the final inning against junior Cody Scott (0-1) and pushed across the winning run with two outs when sophomore third baseman Ryan Dalton could not come up with Cesario's chopper.

Wil Browning (1-0) picked up the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.

The Roadrunners jumped out an early lead in the opening frame.

Freshman Riley Good led off the game with a double down the left-field line. Senior Tyler Carpenter's fly out to right allowed Good to advance to third and Dalton followed with a walk. Sophomore Daniel Rockett then laced a double off the wall in left, which plated Good and Dalton.

Louisiana-Monroe cut the lead in half on a Caleb Clowers' RBI single in the bottom of the frame.

UTSA starter Jordan Langley, who allowed one run on four hits in four innings, saw the first three batters of the third reach safely, but the Sealy native proceeded retire the next three to quell the threat.

The Warhawks went on to score the equalizer in the sixth.

Corben Green led off with a single and came around to score when Jarrett Hammond was hit by a pitch from senior Kevin Clarke with the bases loaded.

Sophomore Jake Wood had a pair of hits and Rockett was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead UTSA at the plate.

Les Aulds and Clowers both had two safeties for the Warhawks.

ULM starter Drew Granier notched six strikeouts over four innings of work and James Jones added five in his 3.2 panels.

The four-game series continues Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
