Ayala tops nation's 75th-ranked singles player in UTSA loss

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Sophomore Martin Ayala knocked off the nation's 75th-ranked singles player, but it was not enough, as the UTSA men's tennis team fell, 5-2, at No. 58 New Mexico State on Saturday.

Ayala, the two-time reigning Southland Conference Player of the Week, defeated Arthur Surreaux, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 1 singles to improve to 4-2 on the season.

However, it was all Aggies (6-4) from there, as they proceeded to win the remaining five singles matches, all in straight sets.

The Roadrunners (2-4) won the doubles point after winning the Nos. 2 and 3 matchups. Freshman Yannick Junger and sophomore Tyler Brown won at the second spot, 8-4, while senior Max Stratmann and freshman Kolby Kilgo earned an 8-5 victory.

UTSA concludes its five-match road trip on Sunday with a 10 a.m. (CT) contest against Northern Arizona (2-6), which has dropped six consecutive outings.
