SORRENTO, Fla. — Sophomore Paola Valerio shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday and finished in an eighth-place tie in the individual standings at the UCF Challenge. Her performance help lead UTSA to 10th in the team standings.
Valerio recorded her third top 10 finish of the year with her three-round total of 216 (75-69-72). The Mexico City native recorded birdies on Nos. 2, 5, 11 and 17 and she never was over par during her final 18 holes.
Her effort helped the Roadrunners improve their score for the second consecutive day and finish in the top 10 with a 901 (302-296-303).
Freshman Fabiola Arriaga finished tied for 28th with a 224 (75-71-78) after firing a final-round 78, while junior Summer Batiste’s final-round 75 brought her up to a tie for 50th. Not far behind was freshman Taylor Newlin, who finished tied for 58th with a 233 (75-79-79), and junior Bruna Spengler, who shot a 236 (77-81-78) to tie for 69th.
Coastal Carolina took the team title with an 867 (285-289-293). Meanwhile, Kentucky's Ashleigh Albrecht and Minnesota's Teresa Puga were declared co-medalists following two playoff holes.
UTSA will hit the links again at the Islanders Classic, which is scheduled for Feb. 26-27 in Corpus Christi.
