UTSA finishes 12th at Oak Hills Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Led by a 21st-place finish from senior Lewis Chong, the UTSA men’s golf team finished 12th at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at Oak Hills Country Club (par 71/6,765 yards).

Chong entered the final 18 holes in a tie for 20th place after carding a one-over-par 143 (70-73) on Monday. The Lethbridge, Alberta, native used three birdies to help register a three-over 74 in windier conditions in the final round and finished tied for 21st with his four-over 217 (70-73-74).

The Roadrunners placed 12th out of 17 teams after turning in a 310 on Tuesday, finishing the 54-hole event with an 896 (292-294-310).

No. 20 Texas Tech ran away with the team crown by firing a 15-under 837 (273-277-287), while No. 49 Oklahoma (281-283-285=849) and No. 28 North Texas (276-282-292=850) finished second and third, respectively. Texas Tech's Nils Floren won the individual title with a five-under 208 (69-71-68).

Sophomore Nicko Dodd tied for 41st after recording a 223 (77-68-78), while freshman Ryan Werre tied for 54th with a 226 (73-74-79). Sophomore Mitchell Griffin, who aced No. 13 on Monday, tied for 73rd (72-79-79=230) and freshman Xabier Basanez was 93rd (78-83-81=242). Competing as individuals, sophomore Austin Struble placed 81st (78-74-81=233), sophomore Taylor Koser tied for 82nd (79-75-80=234) and freshman Eddie DeVane finished 92nd (79-79-82=240).

The Roadrunners will return to the course next week when they travel to Houston to compete at the Rice Intercollegiate, which is scheduled for Feb. 21-22.
