McNeese State blanks UTSA in Getterman Classic consolation game

WACO — The UTSA softball team managed just two hits off Megan Bond and fell to McNeese State, 4-0, in Sunday's consolation game of the Getterman Classic.

Bond worked around a leadoff double off the bat off senior Kristin Kappler in the second before the Cowgirls (1-4) dented the scoreboard an inning later. The Roadrunners (2-3) aided the McNeese offense with a pair of errors in the frame, which led to two unearned runs.

From there, freshman Katy Akins retired nine consecutive batters before the Cowgirls tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh.

UTSA had a chance for its third comeback win of the weekend, but it stranded runners on second and third to end the game.

Bond (1-2) picked up her first win of the season while Akins (0-1) went the distance in taking the loss.

Senior Carrie Monroe reached on a bunt single with one down in the third for the Roadrunners' only other hit of the morning.

Freshman Molly Fichtner was the lone Roadrunner to be named to the All-Tournament Team. She was 8-for-16 (.500 BA) with a double, grand slam and six RBIs in this weekend's five contests.

UTSA is back in action next weekend at the Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa, Ala. UTSA will face Syracuse and Alabama on Friday, Feb. 18, and Louisville the next day before bracket play begins.
