UTSA drops pair on second day of Getterman Classic

WACO — With two runners on base in the seventh, the UTSA softball team could not come up with the big hit it needed and the Roadunners fell by a score of 4-3 to Baylor before dropping a 9-2 decision to No. 24 Illinois on Satrurday at the Getterman Classic.

In UTSA's first game of the day, the Lady Bears jumped ahead 3-0 by loading the bases and scoring runs on a wild pitch, RBI single and an error.

The Roadrunners (2-2) picked up a run in the fourth when junior Ashley Kappler produced a one-out double and scored on a pair of wild pitches by Liz Paul.

However, Baylor (3-0) used its speed on the basepaths to plate an unearned run in the fifth.

After a single and a walk, a throwing error on a double-steal attempt plated Dani Leal for a 4-1 lead.

UTSA climbed back with a two-out rally in the sixth.

Freshman Molly Fichtner doubled home junior Caitlyn Ivy to chase Paul from the game. Senior Danyé Holmes promptly greeted Courtney Repka with an RBI single before the side was retired.

The Roadrunners threatened in the seventh, putting runners on first and second with two outs before a ground out ended the game.

In the nightcap, the Fighting Illini (2-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a run in the first and three each in the third and fourth innings to avenge an 11-10 setback to the Birds on Friday.

Kappler put UTSA on the board in the fifth with an RBI single to score freshman Siera Sproul, who walked and stole second. Senior Carrie Monroe provided the team's only other run of the contest with a sacrifice fly an inning later.

UTSA will face McNeese State (0-4) in the tournament's consolation game at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
