PRAIRIE VIEW — UTSA's men's tennis team kicked off a five-match road trip with a 7-0 victory at Prairie View A&M on Friday.
The Roadrunners (2-1) used a balanced attack to defeat the Panthers (0-2), who were playing their first match since Jan. 15.
UTSA gained an early advantage after sweeping through the opening three doubles contests.
Senior Max Stratmann and freshman Kolby Kilgo blanked Jamaal James and David Aldaz at the No. 3 position. Sophomore Martin Ayala and senior Daniel Moreiras recorded an 8-2 win over Kristen Powell and Craig Wiltz, Jr. at the No. 1 spot to clinch the point. Meanwhile, juniors Pedro Zanotelli and Shariq Khan posted an 8-5 win against Kuda Nyatoti and Ronald Chidzikwe at the No. 2 slot.
Junior Daniel Moser improved to 2-0 in singles play this spring following a straight-sets win over Wiltz at No. 4 singles. Sophomores Tyler Brown and Hugo Guanais each took care of their opponents in straight sets. Brown gained a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 position, while Guanais made a successful season debut with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at the No. 6 spot.
UTSA's freshmen were equally impressive with Yannick Junger and Oliver Breininger each posting straight-sets victories at the Nos. 3 and 5 slots, respectively. Ayala finished off the shutout after going the distance in a 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) victory against Kuda Nyatoti at the top spot.
The Roadrunners are back in action on Saturday when they head to Houston for an 11 a.m. match at No. 34 Rice (6-2).
