UTSA opens home campaign with convincing win

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women's tennis team soared past Texas-Pan American in convincing fashion with a 6-1 victory in its 2011 home opener on Sunday.

The Roadrunners (1-2) swept all three doubles matches and proceeded to claim five of the six singles matches to pick up their first win of the season.

Senior Caroline Dedering and junior Micaela Silva posted an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles to start the rout. Sophomores Kavya Menon and Mariel Maffezzolli quickly followed with an 8-0 triumph at the No. 3 slot and, just minutes later, junior Stefanie Peana and freshman Isabelle Jonsson wrapped up the doubles sweep with an 8-1 decision at the top spot.

UTSA quickly began to build on its lead in singles play, as sophomore Katie Ottenbreit cruised past Blanca Garcia Izaquirre, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 6 position. Menon gained the Roadrunners' third point of the day with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Dana Nazarova at No. 4.

The Birds clinched the match following the conclusion of the No. 5 contest when Dedering swept Suncica Strkic, 6-2, 6-2.

Jonsson and Silva each outlasted their opponents to wrap up the match with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, respectively. Jonsson registered a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) win over Malin Anderson, while Silva went the distance to defeat Reetta Raty, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 1-0 (10-5).

UTSA returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 5, when it hosts host Laredo Community College at 2 p.m.
