DALLAS — The UTSA women's tennis team dropped its second consecutive match to open the season after being swept by No. 27 SMU on Sunday at the Turpin Tennis Center.
SMU (3-0) grabbed the early 1-0 lead after posting three straight doubles victories.
Sophomores Kavya Menon and Mariel Maffezzolli dropped an 8-2 decision to Ashley Turpin and Shahzoda Hatamova at the No. 3 spot. Shortly after, junior Stefanie Peana and freshman Isabelle Jonsson were stopped by Marta Lesniak and Aleksandra Malyarchikova, 8-5, at the top position. Junior Micaela Silva and senior Caroline Dedering were unable to claim a win for the Roadrunners (0-2) at the No. 2 spot after dropping an 8-3 decision to Heather Steinbauer and Edyta Cieplucha.
The Mustangs kept UTSA scoreless as second-ranked Lesniak posted a straight-sets win over Peana (6-0, 6-1) in No. 1 singles. Silva was blanked in a straight-sets loss to Steinbauer in third singles and SMU clinched the match when Cieplucha downed Jonsson at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-2.
