Softball signs pair to National Letters of Intent

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head softball coach Lori Cook announced Thursday that Geena Garcia (San Antonio, Texas/Johnson HS) and Vivian Tijerina (San Antonio, Texas/Southwest HS) have signed National Letters of Intent to join the program for the 2012 campaign.

“We are excited to sign these two top local players and we feel they will come in and make a positive impact both on and off the field,” Cook said. “Vivian and Geena are power hitters that will fill the void of our graduating senior class. Vivian can play third base and catch, while Geena is a true outfielder who has a strong arm and great range.”

Garcia will begin her third season at Johnson High School this spring after a year at Reagan High School. She was named second-team All-District 26-5A her freshman campaign and then first-team as a sophomore at shortstop. Last season, she again was named to the first team, this time as an outfielder.

Like Garcia, Tijerina is a four-year varsity starter for Southwest High School and has shown her versatility on the diamond. She was named first-team All-District 29-5A at catcher her freshman year and first-team all-district at shortstop her sophomore and junior seasons. Tijerina hit .409 with seven home runs last season to help lead the Dragons to their second consecutive district championship and a spot in the area finals. In 2009, she helped the Dragons to the Region IV semifinals.
