SAN ANTONIO — Senior Devin Gibson, sophomore Melvin Johnson III and freshman Jeromie Hill scored 14 points apiece to lead UTSA to a 71-61 victory against Cameron on Friday night at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners (2-1) extended their non-conference home-court winning streak to 16 games and improved to 3-0 all-time against the Division II Aggies (2-0), who counted the game as an exhibition.
Gibson registered a game-high six assists to go along with five rebounds and he came up with three steals to increase his UTSA career-record total to 241. Hill, who recorded double-doubles in his first two games with the Roadrunners, was 5-for-8 from the field and he added four rebounds, while Johnson III was 3-for-5 from downtown and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line in reaching double digits for the third time this season.
UTSA held a 39-32 lead at the break but extended that to double digits early in the second half.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from the right wing by junior Sei Paye and Hill helped UTSA build a 49-34 lead with a little more than 15 minutes to play.
Cameron responded with an 11-4 run over the next five minutes, keyed by a pair of layups from Josh Davis, to make it an eight-point game at the midway point of the half. A long trey from the top of the key by Vinicius Telo cut the UTSA lead to 61-54 with 4:30 to play.
The Aggies kept it interesting, as a Trey Foster jumper from the right elbow made it 64-59 with 3:19 remaining.
The Roadrunners answered with a jumper by junior Alex Vouyoukas, a three-point play by Hill and an offensive put-back by Gibson to ice the game.
Davis led Cameron with 13 points, while Velo added a dozen and game-high 10 rebounds.
The Roadrunners host Troy (1-2) at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22.
