SAN ANTONIO — Emily Carter scored a game-high 22 points to lead No. 23 TCU to a 83-59 win against the UTSA women’s basketball team on Friday night at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners (2-1) were led by senior Alysse Davis’ 19 points. Fellow senior Amber Gregg and junior Ashley Gardner also reached double figures with 13 and 10, respectively.
Helena Sverrisdottir and Starr Crawford helped pace the Horned Frogs (3-0) with 18 and 17 points, respectively and Crawford added a game-high dozen rebounds.
TCU jumped out to an early 12-2 lead on the strength of 3-pointers by Sverrisdottir and Antoinette Thompson. UTSA responded with a 10-3 run, capped by a Gregg layup, to cut the deficit to just three (15-12) with 12:10 to go in the half.
However, TCU used a 22-5 run over an eight-minute stretch near the end of the half to extend its lead and it took a 44-25 lead into the locker room.
The Roadrunners used their defense to climb back in the game midway through the second half. After falling behind 58-31 with just over 15 minutes to play, UTSA began to chip away at the TCU lead.
A 17-1 run in a six-minute span cut the deficit to 11 (59-48) with nine minutes to play. Four different players scored during the stretch, led by six points from senior Ashleigh Franklin. UTSA forced three turnovers while TCU went 0-for-7 from the floor during the run.
However, UTSA could get no closer and the Horned Frogs pulled away late.
The Roadrunners shot just 33 percent from the floor, while TCU connected at a 49-percent clip.
UTSA will be back in action on Sunday when it faces SMU (0-2) in a 2 p.m. contest on Alumni Day. Former Southland Conference Player of the Year Monica Gibbs will become the first player in program history to have her jersey retired in a halftime ceremony.
