Roadrunners in fifth after first day of Alamo Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Led by junior Shannon Jungman’s 72, the UTSA women’s golf team finished with an opening-round 298, which was good for fifth place on Sunday at the Alamo Invitational.

Jungman carded five birdies on the day and she stands in a five-way tie for third place on the individual leaderboard.

Meanwhile, sophomore Paola Valerio had a strong front nine in which she shot one-under-par and she finished the day in 10th with a 74. Freshman Taylor Newlin, who recorded four birdies, finished tied for 20th with a 75 and junior Summer Batiste and freshman Fabiola Arriaga both carded rounds of 77 to tie for 36th. Batiste registered birdies on Nos. 2 and 18, while Arriaga went one-under on Nos. 2, 3 and 7.

The Roadrunners are tied with No. 18 Notre Dame and one stroke behind No. 13 Tulane in the team standings. No. 17 Colorado leads the field after shooting a 291. TCU’s Brooke Beeler and Colorado’s Emily Talley top the individual standings after shooting five-under-par 67s.

The second round will tee off at 11 a.m. on Monday.
