Jonsson, Peana win Cougar Fall Draw's doubles consolation title

HOUSTON — Junior Stefanie Peana and freshman Isabelle Jonsson captured the Flight A consolation championship at the Cougar Fall Draw on Sunday to lead the UTSA women's tennis team in its final fall tournament.

The duo lost an 8-6 decision to Texas State's Jessica Kahts and Melissa Hadad in the opening round of the main draw before reeling off three consecutive wins to claim the consolation title. Peana and Jonsson topped UALR's Yana Kakovkina and Viktoriya Plyuta, 8-6, in the final.

Junior Katie Ottenbreit and sophomore Mariel Maffezzolli teamed up in doubles Flight B competition. The pair defeated Houston's Celia Fraser and Elena Kazakova, 8-5, before falling in the second round to Texas State's Mariana Perez and Jessica Laing, 8-4.

The Roadrunners posted five wins in singles action, all in the first round.

Jonsson and fellow junior Micaela Silva each netted straight-set victories in Flight B, while sophomore Kavya Menon picked up a straight-sets decision from UALR's Rebecca Van Den Houte (6-4, 7-6 [4]) in Flight C. Ottenbreit won in two sets against Prairie View A&M's Alejandra Barrera  (6-3, 6-3) in Flight D before falling to Houston's Jo Garvey in the second round (6-0, 6-1). Maffezzolli also completed a straight-sets win over Arkansas State's Tina Ojdanic in Flight E (6-4, 6-3).
