Leroy's goal lifts UTSA in overtime

SAN ANTONIO —  Junior Jodi Leroy's goal in the 97th minute propelled the UTSA women's soccer team to a 2-1 comeback win against Northwestern State on Friday night at the Recreational Sports Complex.

The Roadrunners improved to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in Southland Conference action, while the Lady Demons fell to 6-8 (1-2 SLC).

Neither team had much success in the opening minutes of the match.

Northwestern State struck first in the 24th minute when Ashlee Savona took a header from Melodie Johnson near midfield and raced past the UTSA defense and sopomore goalie Dacia Webb for an early 1-0 lead.

The Birds answered just before halftime when senior Allison Dillon's fourth goal of the season tied the match at one. Dillon took a pass from freshman Laylla da Cruz and put a shot past goalie Jessica Danku from the left side of the penalty box.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the second half but neither could capitalize.

UTSA totaled 10 corner kicks for the night, including four in the second half, but it came up empty each time, which forced the team's first overtime match of the fall.

The opening minutes of extra time looked much like the second half, with the both defense's putting the brakes on any attack.

However, Leroy took advantage on a mistake by Danku, who couldn't corral a touch from sophomore Stephanie Ogilvie, leaving the net wide open. the Rowlett native tapped the ball in for her second goal of the season, giving the Roadrunners their fifth triumph in six all-time meetings with the Lady Demons.

UTSA will look to stay perfect in Southland play at noon on Sunday against Central Arkansas (4-6-2, 0-2-1 SLC).
