BEAUMONT — Juniors Cole Reveal and Albert Cardenas both finished in the top 10 and the duo helped lead the UTSA men's cross country team to third at Thursday's Southland Conference Championships at Bayou Din Golf Club.
Reveal placed eighth after touring 8,000-meter loop in 25:22.7, while Cardenas was one spot back in ninth following his 25:27.3 clocking and the pair earned all-conference honors.
Junior Ivan Garcia (26:11.1), redshirt sophomore Daniel Balbontin (26:15.0) and junior Brandon Chiuminetta (26:17.2) rounded out the Roadrunners' scorers after finishing 19th, 20th and 21st, respectively.
Sophomore Jim Stitt (22nd/26:19.4) and freshman Joaquin Ortegon (53rd/27:42.0) also were in action for UTSA.
Lamar won its fifth consecutive league crown with 38 points, while McNeese State (70) edged the Roadrunners by seven points for second place, which gave UTSA its second third-place finish in a row. Meanwhile, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Patrick Kimeli won the individual championship in 24:47.0.
"I'm proud of how the guys performed today," men's cross country/distance coach Scott Slade said. "We certainly weren't the favorite by any means, but I thought they excuted our plan well and gave it all they had."
"The guys really went after it this morning," Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Aaron Fox said. "Scott did a heck of a job getting the team ready for the meet and they really went out and competed well."
The Roadrunners will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 13, when they travel to Waco for the NCAA South Central Regional.
