LIHUE, Hawaii – Led by a trio of 19th-place individual finishes, the UTSA men’s golf team recorded its best finish of the fall campaign with a fifth-place showing at the Kauai Collegiate Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at Puakea Golf Course (6,954 yards/par 72).
Senior Lewis Chong, junior Payne Wilkie and freshman Ryan Werre all finished at seven-over-par 223 as part of a seven-way tie for 19th place, as the Roadrunners finished the 54-hole tournament and the fall season with an 895 (297-303-295). The fifth-place effort easily bettered the previous top fall showing of 12th at last week's Lone Star Invitational.
Chong carded a final-round, one-under 71, while Wilkie and Werre fired a 73 and 76, respectively. Sophomore Nicko Dodd tied for 30th with a 228 (73-78-77), while sophomore Austin Struble turned in a 232 (79-78-75) to tie for 42nd.
San Diego successfully defended the team crown for the second straight season with an 842 (281-279-282), while British Columbia was 21 strokes back in second (863). Hawaii (876) and Seattle (881) finished just ahead of the Roadrunners, who edged Northern Colorado (899), Gonzaga (900) and Hawaii (908) for the top-five finish.
