SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head coach Lori Cook announced Tuesday her program's 2011 schedule, which is highlighted by 19 home games and contests against five 2010 NCAA Tournament teams.
"We have put together a very competitive schedule this year to prepare us for Southland Conference play and beyond," said Cook, who will begin her sixth season this spring. "We will be challenged very early in the year with tournaments at Baylor and Alabama. Our non-conference games will give us the competition we need to compete for a Southland Conference Championship this season."
The Roadrunners, 23-29 a season ago, open their 52-game slate from Feb. 11-13 at the Getterman Classic where they will face Illinois, McNeese State and tournament host Baylor. UTSA then will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., the following weekend to face Syracuse, Louisville and 2010 Super Regional squad Alabama at the Bama Bash.
A single game at North Texas on Feb. 25 will provide the Roadrunners with a non-conference test before opening Southland play March 1-2 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. UTSA then will host Northwestern State in its home-opening series from March 5-6 at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners will face Texas A&M (March 9), Stephen F. Austin (March 12-13), Texas Southern (March 16) and defending Southland Tournament Champion McNeese State (March 26-27) on the road, as they play 12 of 20 games away from the Alamo City in March. Sam Houston State will travel to Roadrunner Field for a three-game set from March 19-20 in UTSA's only other home tilts during the month.
A March 30 doubleheader with Houston Baptist will kick off a season-long seven-game home stand, which also will include a three-game series with UT Arlington (April 2-3) and April 5 twinbill against Texas Southern.
The Roadrunners then will hit the road for a five-game stretch that includes a three-game series at Southeastern Louisiana (April 9-10) and a doubleheader at Houston Baptist (April 13).
Three-game sets against Central Arkansas (April 16-17) and Nicholls (April 22-23) sandwich a road contest at Baylor on April 20, while an April 26 game at Texas and three-game series at I-35 rival Texas State (April 29-30) will wrap up the regular season.
The Southland Tournament will be played from May 12-14 in Huntsville.
