SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA softball team took to the streets last Saturday night and raised more than $3,000 for the South Texas chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) as part of the annual Light the Night Walk in downtown San Antonio.
The team walked to honor the memory of former UTSA pitcher Hope Ortiz, who lost her battle with leukemia two-and-a-half years ago. Ortiz was a three-year letterwinner for the Roadrunners' back-to-back-to-back Southland Conference Regular Season Championship teams from 2004-06.
"It was a great way to honor Hope and give back to the organization that helped her and her family throughout the illness," head coach Lori Cook said. "We had a great turnout with our current team, former teammates of Hope, UTSA softball alumni and the Ortiz family."
The Light the Night Walk is the LLS's nationwide annual evening fundraising walk to celebrate and commemorate people whose lives have been touched by cancer. The purpose of the walk is to raise funds to benefit LLS's efforts to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, as well as providing education and services for patients with these diseases and their families.
