WACO — Junior Stefanie Peana and freshman Isabelle Jonsson each advanced to the second round of last weekend's USTA/ITA Texas Regional to lead the UTSA women’s tennis team.
Jonsson moved past Baylor's Aya Bara in straight sets (6-1, 7-5) in the opening round and Peana edged UTEP's Gabriela Vazquez in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 7-5) to advance. However, both fell in the ensuing round in straight sets.
Senior Caroline Dedering and junior Micaela Silva each were bested in a pair of singles matches on the day.
In doubles action, Jonsson and Peana fell to UTEP's Carolina Deluca and Martina Trierweiler, 8-5, while Dedering and Silva were shut out by North Texas' Nadia Lee and Madura Ranganathan, 8-0. After receiving byes in the consolation first and second rounds, Jonsson and Peana rebounded to defeat Rice's Rebekka Hanle and Dominique Harmath, 8-2, in the third round before withdrawing prior to their fourth-round match.
UTSA will conclude its fall campaign from Nov. 5-6 at the Cougar Fall Draw in Houston.
