SAN ANTONIO — Local businessman David Spencer and his wife, Jennifer — a UTSA alumna — recently pledged $250,000 to support UTSA Athletics. and part of their gift is a five-year commitment to purchase a suite for UTSA Football games.
“We wanted to get in on the ground floor with UTSA Football,” Spencer said. “There is nothing quite as exciting as a college football game. Kids want to live on a campus that has fun things to do and few things are as fun as a football program. We think football will dramatically improve the student experience and are excited to provide a small bit of help.”
At its regular weekly meeting at 9 a.m. on Thursday, the San Antonio City Council is scheduled to consider a five-year contract for UTSA Football to use the Alamodome for its home games. The program’s first home contest is scheduled for Sept. 3, 2011, against Northeastern Oklahoma. The Roadrunners are slated to play six home tilts in their inaugural season.
UTSA Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey said response to the newly-created program, suites and season tickets has been incredible. As part of its contract, UTSA controls 40 of 50 available suites for Roadrunners football games. The City and UTSA will split revenue from the remaining 10 suites.
“We have verbal commitments and down payments for 28 of the initial 40 suites,” Hickey said. “We’re so appreciative to the Spencers for their commitment above and beyond the suite purchase. They are tremendous supporters of the entire University.”
David and Jennifer Spencer have provided more than $1 million in support to UTSA. In 2007, they established the David and Jennifer Spencer Endowed Chair for the UTSA College of Engineering.
Hickey said nearly 3,500 season tickets have been sold to date. Purchases must be completed by April 1, 2011, to be part of the inaugural season suite and seat assignment process.
