SAN ANTONIO — Freshman Ryan Werre carded a one-under-par 215 and finished 10th on the individual leaderboard to lead the UTSA men’s golf team to 12th place at the second annual Lone Star Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Werre entered the final 18 holes in a tie for 18th place after turning in rounds of 70 and 75 on Monday. The Redcliff, Alberta, native moved up the individual standings with a 70 in the final round, including a 33 on the back nine that was highlighted by birdies on Nos. 13, 14 and 16. Werre, who tied Texas State’s Tom Moore for 10th, finished with eight birdies over 54 holes in recording his highest finish of his debut season.
Sophomore Nicko Dodd was close behind in a five-way tie for 20th after registering a four-over 220 (71-74-75). Senior Lewis Chong placed 57th with a 234 (76-77-81), while sophomore Mitchell Griffin and freshman Eddie DeVane finished 64th (78-88-86=252) and 65th (82-86-88=256), respectively.
The Roadrunners tallied a 54-hole total of 919 (295-312-312) to finish in 12th in the team standings.
UT Arlington won the team title running away, carding a two-under 288 to close out a nine-under 855 (291-278 on Sunday). No. 28 Notre Dame was second with a two-under 862 (297-280=285), while No. 26 North Texas was one shot behind in third (291-287-285=863). The Mean Green’s Carlos Ortiz was the individual medalist after firing a five-under 211 (71-73-67), edging Texas State’s Alastair Jones by one shot (71-71-70=212).
Four other Roadrunners competed as individuals, led by freshman Austin Struble, who tied for 49th with a 288 (76-80-72). Junior Payne Wilkie tied for 52nd (74-77-79=230), while freshman Xabier Basanez and sophomore Taylor Koser finished 59th (77-79-80=236) and 63rd (87-80-80=247), respectively.
UTSA returns to the course next Monday-Wednesday, Oct. 25-27, when the travel to Lihue, Hawaii, to compete in the Kauai Collegiate Invitational.
