Jewasko honored by Southland Conference for third consecutive week

FRISCO — Another week and another Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor for junior libero Kelsey Jewasko, as the San Antonio native earned the league's top award for the third consecutive week, the conference office announced on Monday.

Jewasko, who helped UTSA to a pair of road wins at Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State last week, is the first-ever Roadrunner to receive the weekly honors three times in a row and first in the Southland since Stephen F. Austin's Stephanie Figgers won four straight during the 2005 campaign.

She collected 45 digs (6.43 dps) in the two victories. Jewasko racked up 26 against the Ladyjacks, her ninth 20-plus effort of the fall, and added another 19 against the Bearkats while helping anchor a Roadrunners defense that held Sam Houston State to a .026 hitting percentage.

UTSA posted a 3-1 win at Stephen F. Austin last Thursday, its first win in Nacogdoches in more than a decade (Sept. 16, 2000). The Birds then swept Sam Houston State two days later, winning in Huntsville for the first time in nearly six years (Oct. 15, 2004).

Jewasko leads the league with 387 digs and ranks second overall at 5.30 per set.

UTSA (9-9, 3-1 SLC) returns to the court on Wednesday night when it concludes a three-match road trip at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. (7-10, 1-2 SLC). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
