Junior Elise Huskey was named to this weekend's Sacramento State Invitational All-Tournament Team.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — UTSA ended this weekend's Sacramento State Invtiational on a losing note Saturday, as the Roadrunners dropped a four-set decision to Cal State Northridge (25-17, 18-25, 16-25, 18-25) before going distance in a setback against Elon (25-21, 21-25, 17-25, 25-21, 11-15).
The two losses dropped UTSA to 2-5 on the young season and the Birds now have lost five of their last half dozen matches since beginning the campaign with a five-set win against Mississippi eight days ago.
Junior Elise Huskey was the lone Roadrunner to be named to the All-Tournament team following a weekend that saw her record 32 kills (2.46 kps), a .304 hitting percentage, 28 digs (2.15 dps), eight total blocks (2 assists/6 solos) and a pair of service aces.
The day began on a positive note, with UTSA winning its first set by eight points, but the Matadors (2-3) hit a robust .412 the rest of the way en route to their second victory in as many meetings with the Birds.
Huskey just missed a double-double with her team-high 14 kills and nine digs and she also hit .429 in her 28 attacks.
The Roadrunners won the opening frame for the third time this weekend against the Phoenix (6-2), but they promptly saw Elon take the next two stanzas before sending the match to a fifth-and-deciding set for the fourth time in seven contests this fall. However, it wasn't meant to be, as the Phoenix scored six of the final eight points of the match to claim their first victory of the tournament.
Junior Kelsey Jewasko recorded a career-high 33 digs in the defeat, while senior Briana Mason established a new personal record with five block solos as part of an eight-block night. Senior Kendra Rowland led UTSA with 13 winners and redshirt sophomore Kelsey Schwirtlich handed out 47 assists.
The Roadrunners will return to action on Friday, Sept. 10, when they open play in the UTSA Classic with an 11 a.m. contest with Texas-Pan American (1-6). The Birds also will square off against UTEP (4-2) at 7 p.m. on the opening day of action at the Convocation Center.
