Frogs bounce Roadrunners, 4-1

SAN ANTONIO — Three first-half goals proved to be too much for the UTSA women’s soccer team to overcome, as TCU took home a 4-1 win on Friday night at the Recreational Sports Complex.

The Horned Frogs (5-4-1) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead following goals by Kim Castleberry and Jordan Calhoun in the eighth and 22nd minutes, respectively. Kaylie Garcia set up Castleberry’s goal, while Calhoun’s strike came off a deflection in front of the Roadrunners' net.

The Birds (5-5) cut the deficit in half in the 38th minute when freshman Valentina Lefort took a rebound off a deflected shot from junior Taylor Padia. TCU keeper Kelsey Walters’ diving stop of Padia’s attempt left the goal wide open for Lefort, who cashed in for her second winner of the season.

Brittany Slyman pushed the TCU lead back to three with a goal off a corner kick by Alex Mechalske in the 42nd minute, which gave the Horned Frogs a 3-1 halftime advantage.

In the 56th minute, Castleberry’s second goal of the night made it 4-1.

UTSA had chances late, including three consecutive corner kicks, but it was not able to find the back of the net.

The Roadrunners will host I-35 rival Texas State at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, in their Southland Conference opener.
