Roadrunners blank Texas Southern, 7-0

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s soccer team improved to 5-3, building on its best start in school history, with an easy 7-0 win against Texas Southern on a rainy Friday night at the Recreational Sports Complex. The match was the first of six consecutive home tilts for the Roadrunners.

Senior Allison Dillon set up freshman Maria Jose Rojas in the 14th minute for the first goal of the night. Rojas beat Tigers goalie Erika Vasquez with a shot into the upper right corner of the net for her third winner of the season.

Senior Chelsea Zimmerman and Rojas picked up assists on the Roadrunners' next strike, which came from freshman Laylla da Cruz in the 30th minute. The goal was de Cruz' fourth of the season, which is tied for tops on the team.

Zimmerman and sophomore Lindsay South extended the lead to 4-0 at the break with their second and third netters, respectively, of the fall.

UTSA didn’t waste time after intermission, as freshman Valentina Lefort picked up her first collegiate goal in the 53rd minute thanks to creative passing from juniors Jodi Leroy and Taylor Padia.

After freshman Alex Saraceno became the second Roadrunner to notch her first collegiate goal on the night, Padia closed out the scoring in the 80th minute.

The UTSA defense kept Texas Southern (0-5) away from freshman keeper Danielle Snyder. The Tigers managed just two shots in the match, one in each half, compared to 30 by the Roadrunners. The shutout was UTSA’s third of the season.

The Birds will look to improve upon their 3-1 all-time mark against Houston in 1 p.m. home contest on Sunday.
