Emily Blackburn passed away at the age of 22 early Sunday morning.
SAN ANTONIO — Former UTSA softball student-athlete Emily Blackburn died in a multiple-vehicle accident early Sunday morning near Richmond, Texas. She was coming to a stop on U.S. Highway 59 to avoid an accident when a car crashed into her from behind.
"Emily was an amazing person who touched many people's lives," head coach Lori Cook said. "Emily was the ultimate teammate and friend, a player that every coach wanted to have on their team. She will be missed by those people whose lives she touched.
"I'd like to send my thoughts and prayers to Emily's family and friends. I also would like to thank all the coaches from other programs that have showed their support to Emily, her family and the UTSA softball program."
A native of Kingwood, she played in 23 games for the Roadrunners last season and finished the year with two doubles and five RBIs. Defensively, Blackburn made 15 starts at third base and recorded 28 assists a year ago. She redshirted in 2009 after transferring from Oklahoma State.
Visitation is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. on Friday and services will take place at 3 p.m. the next day at Brookside Funeral Home (13402 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039).
