FRISCO — Junior Kevin Clarke and senior Ryan Rummel were named to the Southland Conference's Baseball All-Academic Teams, the league office announced on Wednesday.

Clarke, a right-handed pitcher, earned a spot on the 12-member first team by virtue of his 3.76 grade-point average in business management. The Huntsville native played a part in 13 of UTSA’s 22 wins this past spring (team-leading eight wins/team-best five saves). He also recorded a 4.76 ERA and struck out 31 hitters in 34.2 innings (25 appearances) of work in 2009. His eight victories tied for third in the league and was the fifth-best single-season total in UTSA history. Clarke also ranks in a seventh-place tie in program annals with his six career saves. He is four-time Southland Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection.

Meanwhile, Rummel was selected to the second team. The Uvalde native, who maintains a 3.33 gps in accounting, is coming off a final campaign that saw him pick up third-team All-Southland honors for the second time in the last three seasons. He hit .331, which was second-best on the squad, and stroked a team-best 17 doubles. The two-time team captain also added seven homers and 31 RBIs, recorded a .419 on-base average and racked up 93 total bases, which translated to a .581 slugging percentage. A 2008 first-team Southland All-Academic selection, Rummel is a three-time Southland Commissioner’s Honor Roll choice and he represented UTSA at 2009 NCAA Leadership Conference.

The team was voted on by the circuit's coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors. Honorees must maintain a miminum of a 3.0 gpa and have competed in at least 50 percent of their team's games during the season.
