Mitchell Griffin will be back in action at next month's Amateur Public Links Tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
SAN ANTONIO —
Mitchell Griffin shot a six-under-par 138 (68-70) on Tuesday at the Amateur Public Links Qualifier and his first championship earned him a spot in the Amateur Public Links Championship, which is scheduled for July 12-17 in Greensboro, N.C.
The Driftwood native, who just wrapped up his freshman season with the Roadrunners, turned in a four-under-par 68 in the first round and followed that with a two-under-par 70 in the final frame to edge out Carlos Ortiz by three strokes. Following a bogey on the first hole of his opening round, Griffin went on to play the next 26 holes bogey free, which included 11 consecutive pars, and he posted nine birdies during that stretch.
“I’m excited about winning this event and moving on to the Amateur Public Links,” Griffin said. “It’s a great opportunity to play among some of the best amateurs in the country and also gives me a chance to see where I stack up.”
The Amateur Public Links is one of the largest amateur tournaments in the country. The six-day event will be played at Bryant Park Golf Course and the winner will earn an automatic spot to the 2011 Masters.
