SAN ANTONIO — Three members of the UTSA men's track & field team — senior Teddy Williams, junior Devon Bond and freshman Keith Benford — will look to build on an already impressive 2010 campaign when they compete at the NCAA Championhips this week in Eugene, Ore. The four-day meet gets underway on Wednesday afternoon at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Leading the trio of Roadrunners is Williams, who will attempt to become the first four-time All-American in program history when he competes in the 100-meter dash. The Tyler native enters the meet with the nation's top time (t-12th in the world this year), a winning 10.03w clocked on May 16 at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships final. He is coming off a fourth-place effort (10.29) at the national quarterfinals in Austin and that came on the heels of the fastest opening-round clocking (10.25w). Williams will run in the semifinals at 7:45 p.m. (CT) on Wednesday night and the final is slated for 7:25 p.m. (CT) two nights later.
Meanwhile, Bond owns the country's ninth-best triple jump measurement, a school-record 52-10 ¾ (16.12m). The Southland Conference Champion qualified for this week's meet with his skip of 51-11 (15.82m) at the Preliminary Rounds in Austin 12 days ago. UTSA's first-ever triple jumper to appear at a national meet, the Trenton, N.J., native is scheduled to jump at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Benford will look to put a finishing touch on what has been one of the top freshman campaigns in program history when he competes in the high jump at 5:30 p.m. (CT) on Friday. The Pflugerville native qualified for this week's meet with his eighth-place clearance of 6-11 (2.11m) in the preliminary round. He owns a season-best of 7-0 ½ (2.15m), which came in a winning performance at April's Mt. SAC Relays, and that mark tied the program record shared by three other athletes.
The three athletes at this year's meet tie the school standard established four years ago.
