UTSA to face No. 3 Texas in NCAA Tournament opening round

SAN ANTONIO — The Southland Conference Tournament Champion UTSA men’s tennis team learned its NCAA Championships draw on Tuesday and the Roadrunners will face No. 3 Texas in first-round action on Friday, May 14, at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin. The winner of the 1 p.m. contest will advance to play either No. 30 Arizona or No. 32 Minnesota, who will meet at 10 a.m. in the opening round.

UTSA (13-9) and the Longhorns (25-2) will square off for the second time this season. UT, then the eighth-ranked team in the country, handed the Birds a 7-0 setback on Feb. 20 in the state captial.

“Our guys are excited about getting to play Texas for the second time this season,” head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein said. “We are ready and anxious to get going and I think the guys will be focused to take on one of the top teams in the tournament.”

The Longhorns, the tournament's third overall seed, earned the Big 12 Conference's automatic berth with a 4-3 win against No. 10 Texas A&M last weekend.

UTSA and Texas have played one previous time in the postseason, with the Longhorns picking up a 4-0 victory at the 2002 NCAA Tournament.
