FRISCO — Three days after finishing off its second Southland Conference indoor/outdoor sweep in the last three years, the UTSA men's track & field team picked up two more pieces of hardware on Wednesday, as senior All-American Teddy Williams was named the league's Outstanding Track Performer and head coach Aaron Fox was tabbed the circuit's Coach of the Year.
Williams scored a combined 18 points at last weekend's meet in Arlington, winning the second 100 meters title of his illustrious career in addition to finishing second in the 200m.
The Tyler native earned his ninth conference championship overall (five indoor/four outdoor) when he peeled off a wind-aided 10.03, which matched the nation's fastest 100m time of the season (t-10th in the world this year). He then clocked the second-quickest deuce time of his career, a 20.63 (t-12th NCAA), in a runner-up performance to Northwestern State's Justin Walker.
Meanwhile, Fox added yet another award to his already-impressive mantle. The eighth-year mentor earned his second outdoor coaching honor in the last three years and his seventh overall (five indoor/two outdoor).
Fox not only led the Roadrunners to the conference title with a school-record 148 points, but he also tutored four league title-holders — Williams, junior Devon Bond (high jump/triple jump) and freshman Tyler Williamson (long jump) — during the three-day event. Those quartet of gold medal performances pushed the program's all-time total to 46, 19 of which have come since he took over the program in 2003.
UTSA returns to action next weekend for the NCAA Championships Preliminary Round in Austin. The three-day meet starts on Thursday, May 27, at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
