Bragg leads Roadrunners on first day of Southland Outdoor Championships

Freshman Katie Bragg's second-place finish in the hammer on Friday was the best in program history.

ARLINGTON — Freshman Katie Bragg finished second in the hammer throw to highlight first-day action for the UTSA women’s track & field team at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.

Bragg measured 166-7 to post the program’s first-ever runner-up finish in the event at a conference meet. It marked the second-best throw of the season for the Peachtree City, Ga., native who set the school record with a 171-6 mark at the Mt. SAC Relays last month. Meanwhile, junior Taelor Wilson scratched a point with an eighth-place throw of 148-0. Stephen F. Austin’s Frednisha Marshall won the event with a 171-5 effort.

In other finals action, sophomore Kayla Pratt just missed scoring in the 10,000 meters, placing ninth with a time of 37:24.22.

Junior Aimee Jonas is in sixth place after the first four events in the heptathlon. The La Vernia native tallied 2,972 points by posting marks of 14.91 in the 100m hurdles, 5-1 ¼ in the high jump, 30-11 ¾ in the shot put and 26.48 in the 200m. Tabitha Riley of Stephen F. Austin leads with 2,965 points.

In the team standings, the Roadrunners are tied with Northwestern State for fifth place with nine points after three scored events. Defending Champion Stephen F. Austin leads with 24, while McNeese State and Nicholls are tied for second with 20. Southeastern Louisiana stands in fourth with 19 points.

The three-day meet continues on Saturday.
