Roadrunners to compete at Southland Outdoor Championships this weekend

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s track & field team will travel to Arlington to compete in the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, which will take place Friday-Sunday at Maverick Stadium.

The three-day meet gets underway with the heptathlon 100-meter hurdles at 10:30 a.m. on Friday and continues through the opening ceremonies and running finals at 5 p.m. on Sunday. For complete meet information, click here.

The Roadrunners will look to improve upon last year’s ninth-place showing in Nacogdoches.

Senior Jessica Jones was the lone champion in 2009, racing to her second consecutive crown in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best 13.63 clocking.

Stephen F. Austin is the defending champion, as the Ladyjacks scored 173.5 points to outdistance Texas State (135.5) last May.

UTSA athletes lead the conference performance list in three events, including redshirt junior Dana Mecke in the 800m (2:09.42) and 1,500m (school-record 4:25.38) and freshman Amanda McGill in the 400m hurdles (1:00.94).

Meanwhile, Jones has the second-fastest time in the 100m hurdles (13.65) and freshman school record-holder Katie Bragg is second in the hammer (171-6).

Senior Pernilla Savestrand ranks third in the 1,500m (4:33.64) and freshman Briony Miller owns the third-fastest time in the 400m (55.23).

The Roadrunners have won five Southland outdoor titles, three straight from 1992-94 and back-to-back in 1996-97. UTSA has finished fifth or higher 13 times, including placing fourth in 2007 and '08. The Birds have captured 50 individual and relay titles and hold meet records in five different events — Tameka Roberts in the 100m (11.25), 200m (22.94) and long jump (6.66m), Ryanne Dupree in the heptathlon (5,818) and Rosalyn King, Tamny Booker, Lisa Addison and Portia Matthews in the 1,600m relay (3:34.05).
