Senior Emiliano Martinez finished his career with a 15th-place finish at this week's Southland Championships.
SPRINGFIELD, La. — UTSA senior Emiliano Martinez fired a final-round one-under-par 71 on Wednesday and ended the Southland Conference Championship tied for 15th place with a final scorecard of 223 (78-74-71).
Martinez knocked in seven birdies on the final 18 holes to move up 15 spots in the individual rankings. The Laredo native posted a 39 on the front nine but then responded with a four-under-par 32 on the back nine, including back-to-back birdies on the final two holes.
Freshman Nicko Dodd turned in a final score of 225 (69-80-76) and finished tied for 23rd place, while junior Lewis Chong carded rounds of 77-78-71—226. Freshmen Mitchell Griffin and Austin Struble wrapped up the event with three-day totals of 234 and 239, respectively.
“This was a good finish to the year,” head coach John Knauer said. “We had our two best rounds of the season this week. We will look to build upon this for next year with a young team returning.”
Southeastern Louisiana swept both the team and individual championships. The Lions earned the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals and winning the team title by an 11-stroke margin over Central Arkansas. Meanwhile, SLU’s Alvaro Arizabaleta captured the individual crown with a final scorecard of 208 (72-67-69), which was eight-under-par.
