SAN ANTONIO —UTSA continues its season-long nine-game road trip this weekend when it travels to Beaumont for a critical three-game Southland Conference series at Lamar. First pitch in Friday's opener is slated for 6:30 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday's tilts scheduled for 2 and 1 p.m., respectively.
The Roadrunners (13-21, 4-14 SLC) have dropped four contests in a row and seven of eight overall and they continue bring up the rear of the conference standings. The Birds enter the weekend four games out of the eighth and final spot for next month's Southland Tournament. Nicholls and Sam Houston currently share the magical eighth slot with their 8-10 league ledgers, but the Bearkats hold the tiebreaker over UTSA by virtue of its series sweep last month and the Colonels visit the Alamo City in two weeks (May 7-9). Those two teams will square off in Huntsville this weekend.
Junior Tyler Carpenter continues to swing a hot bat from the leadoff spot in the Roadrunners' lineup. The Missouri City native has hit safely in 15 consecutive games, which is two shy of his career high set a year ago. Carpenter is 26-for-65 (.400) with 16 runs scored, two doubles, a triple, three home runs and nine RBis during the streak.
The Cardinals (24-15, 9-9 SLC), currently in the midst of a season-long nine-game home stand, have won five outings in a row, including Wednesday's 7-6 walk-off victory against Houston and last weekend's sweep of Sam Houston State. They stand in seventh in the league standings but are just a game out of fifth.
Lamar leads the all-time series that dates back to the 1996 season, 22-21, but the Birds have been victorious in five of the previous eight meetings the last three springs.
