Redshirt junior Dana Mecke shattered UTSA's 23-year-old 1,500 meters record last Friday.
FRISCO — UTSA redshirt junior Dana Mecke was named Southland Conference Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Mecke shattered the UTSA record in the 1,500 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays last week. The Smithson Valley High product stopped the clock in 4:25.38 to finish as the top collegian and second behind Laura Galvan of Mexico (4:25.20) in the metric mile.
Her time bettered the previous school record of 4:27.61 registered by Paula Wiese in 1987 and it marked a six-second improvement of her previous personal best of 4:31.94 recorded at the Texas Relays two weeks ago.
This marks the second time a Roadrunner has earned the league’s weekly award this outdoor season and the third time this year overall, as freshman Katie Bragg received the honor on three weeks ago and sophomore Kayla Pratt picked up an indoor accolade on Feb. 10.
