UTSA to face Houston Baptist in Wednesday twinbill

SAN ANTONIO —Winners of six of their last seven games, the UTSA softball team will travel to the Bayou City to face Houston Baptist in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. (note time change) at Husky Field.

The Roadrunners (18-26) are coming off their third consecutive Southland Conference series victory after taking two of three games at Nicholls over the weekend. UTSA swept the Huskies, 8-0 and 5-2, last Wednesday in San Antonio. Senior Rudi Cantu and sophomore Caitlyn Ivy had three hits apiece to pace the Roadrunners to a run-ruling in the opener, while junior Danye Holmes launched a walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to propel UTSA to victory in the nightcap.

Ivy continues to lead the Roadrunners in several offensive categories, including batting (.387), hits (53), doubles (6), home runs (12), RBIs (35), slugging (.708) and on-base percentage (.459), while sophomore Ashley Kappler is hitting .300 with five two-baggers, five round-trippers and 17 RBIs. Cantu moved into sole possession of first place on the UTSA career triples chart with her eighth in the Nicholls opener and she also owns the school record for stolen bases with 55. Holmes (6-8, 4.13, 56 Ks), junior right-hander Emily Humpal (10-13, 4.50, 110 Ks) and sophomore righty Morgan Luksa (2-5, 3.28, 36 Ks) all should see action in the circle.

HBU enters the doubleheader with a 15-23 record after splitting two games with Texas Southern on Saturday. Kali Johnson leads the offense with a .352 batting average, while Mollye Mlcak is hitting .328 with five doubles, three home runs and 19 RBIs. Beth Evans (3-7, 2.29, 53 Ks) and Jammie Weidert (6-6, 2.50, 79 Ks) are the top two arms.

UTSA leads the all-time series against HBU, 8-2, and has won five of the last six meetings. The two teams split a twinbill (1-0, 1-4) in Houston last April.
