UTSA in fifth place after first day of Southland Conference Championships

Sophomore Shannon Jungman led UTSA with her opening-round 75 on Monday.

HUNTSVILLE — The UTSA women’s golf team turned in an opening-round 307 on Monday and the Roadrunners stand in fifth place at the Southland Conference Championships.

Central Arkansas and Sam Houston State entered the Ravens Nest clubhouse tied for first place with 293s, while Texas State is four shots behind in third place.

Sophomore Shannon Jungman closed out her round with a 4-over-par 75 and is tied for 12th place. The Pflugerville native led the Birds with a pair of birdies on the day. Meanwhile, sophomore Summer Batiste and freshman Paola Valerio each fired a 77 and are tied for 18th place. Senior Shelly Martinez, who matched Jungman with a pair of birdies, sits one stroke behind Batiste and Valerio with a 78.

Sam Houston State’s Meghan Musk and Central Arkansas’ Rebecca Sorensen share the individual lead at 1-under-par 70, while Texas State's Valdis Jonsdottir is one shot behind them with her 71.

Second-round action is slated for Tuesday morning.
