WALNUT, Calif. — Senior Dana Mecke and freshman Katie Bragg shattered school records to highlight action for the UTSA women’s track & field team at the Mt. SAC Relays held Thursday-Saturday at HIlmer Lodge Stadium.

Mecke took down the UTSA standard in the 1,500 meters, as the Smithson Valley High product stopped the clock in 4:25.38 to finish as the top collegian and second behind Laura Galvan of Mexico (4:25.20). Her time bettered the previous school record of 4:27.61 registered by Paula Wiese in 1987 and it marked a six-second improvement of her previous personal best of 4:31.94 recorded at the Texas Relays two weeks ago.

Bragg destroyed her own school record in the hammer throw with a measure of 52.29 meters (171-6). The Peachtree City, Ga., native established the UTSA standard with a 49.80m mark at the Victor Lopez Invitational last month.

Senior Jessica Jones nearly matched her personal best in the 100m hurdles, skimming the barriers in 13.65 seconds, which was just shy of her personal record of 13.63 posted last season, to finish third among collegians and fourth overall.

Freshman Zaquita McClanahan also turned in a season best in the shot put, heaving the implement out to a 46-1 ½ mark to finish 10th. Freshman Stacia Newton was close behind in 12th with a 42-6 ¾ effort.

Senior Pernilla Savestrand joined Mecke in posting a season best in the metric mile, as the Gothenburg, Sweden, native placed 24th in 4:33.64.

The 4x400m relay team of Jones and freshmen Nicole Washington, Amanda McGill and Briony Miller passed the baton to a season-best time of 3:48.23 to finish seventh.

Several Roadrunners were in action at the Trinity Tigers Twilight at Stevens Stadium on Friday evening.

Junior Jayde James took top honors in the 800 and 1,500m with times of 2:15.46 (season best) and 4:56.75, respectively. Freshman Shartanae Swearengin finished second in the half-mile behind James in 2:17.55, while freshmen Jessica Bitterly and Lauren Losoya took third (5:08.96) and fourth (5:19.53) in the 1,500m behind James and former UTSA standout Hope Jimenez (4:57.17).

Freshman Jessica Edwards leaped to first place in the long jump with an 18-7 ¾ measure, while freshman Marissa Cooksey raced to gold in the 400m with a 59.70 clocking, just ahead of junior Aimee Jonas’s runner-up time of 1:02.38. Junior Rebekah Hill skipped to a second-place mark of 38-0 in the triple jump.

UTSA is back in action next Saturday, April 24, at the Texas State Invitational in San Marcos.
