Junior Danye Holmes' 10-inning shutout in Saturday's opener helped set the stage for UTSA's doubleheder sweep.

THIBODAUX, La. — Juniors Danye Holmes and Emily Humpal each tossed shutouts to help lead the UTSA softball team to a pair of 1-0 victories against Nicholls on Saturday afternoon at the Nicholls Softball Complex.

Holmes went the distance in a 10-inning win in the lid-lifter, while Humpal held the Colonels scoreless in the nightcap to help the Roadrunners run their record to 18-25 overall and 12-11 in the Southland Conference. Nicholls fell to 20-14 and 12-8.

Holmes, a left-hander from Sugar Land, struck out seven against just one walk and scattered eight hits to run her record to 6-8 on the season. Senior Rudi Cantu recorded her eighth career triple to move into sole possession of first place on the school's all-time list.

It took the international tiebreaker rule to help break the scoreless deadlock. Sophomore Ashley Kappler, the last out in the previous inning, was placed on second to start the top of the 10th. She moved to third on a wild pitch and then her older sister, junior Kristin Kappler, promptly drove her home with a base hit to left field.

Nicholls began the bottom of the 10th with Brittany Ezell at second. Laine Strickland moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt, but Holmes got a strikeout and a flyout to end the threat and the game.

Lacey Gros (10-5) fanned 12 and allowed one unearned run on four hits in a losing effort for Nicholls. Megan Gaspard went 3-for-5 to lead the Colonels at the plate.

Humpal fanned four and walked none and she allowed just five hits in seven panels to run her record to 10-12.

UTSA scored the only run it would need in the top of third with the benefit of a Colonels error. Humpal reached second base to start the frame when a fly ball to center field was misplayed. Freshman pinch runner Samantha Beeson then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out to second base by senior Rudi Cantu.

Nicholls put the tying run on second base in its final at-bat, but Humpal got Strickland to fly out to right field to end the game.

Audrey Wood (5-4) was the tough-luck loser for Nicholls, as she struck out six and allowed one unearned run on four hits.

Game three is set for noon Sunday.
