Martinez leads Roadrunners to seventh-place finish at Baylor Invitational

Senior Shelly Martinez recorded her second top-10 finish of the spring on Tuesday.

WACO — UTSA senior Shelly Martinez shot a final-round 75 on Tuesday and closed out the Baylor Invitational tied for seventh place with a final scorecard 230 (78-77-75).

The Roadrunners, meanwhile, turned in a 54-hole total of 947 (316-313-318) and finished seventh in the team standings. Tournament host Baylor claimed the team title with rounds of 303, 301 and 300 (904).

Martinez moved up in the standings on the final day and recorded her second top-10 finish of the season.

Freshman Paola Valerio was tied for sixth place through 36 holes but struggled with an 82 for a two-day total of 235. Sophomore Summer Batiste registered rounds of 80, 79 and 80 (241), while sophomore Shannon Jungman finished three shots behind Batiste with a 244.

Baylor’s Jaclyn Jansen won the individual crown with a two-day total of 220.

UTSA is back in action next week when it heads to Huntsville for the Southland Conference Championships. The three-day tournament begins on Monday, April 19.
