Roadrunners capture six golds at Trinity Alumni Classic

Senior Dana Mecke raced to the fourth-best 800m performance in school history on Saturday.

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s track & field team captured six gold medals and posted 24 top-three finishes overall at the Trinity Alumni Classic held Saturday at Stevens Stadium.

Seniors Jessica Jones (100m hurdles) and Dana Mecke (800m), junior Jayde James (1,500m), freshmen Jessica Edwards (long jump) and Briony Miller (400m) and the 4x400m relay team all were victorious.

Jones led a 1-2 finish by the Roadrunners in the 100m hurdles, skimming the barriers in a season-best time of 13.88. Freshman Amanda McGill was second with a season-best 14.35 clocking.

Mecke, who is a junior in eligibility outdoors, led a 1-2-3 performance by UTSA in the 800m, circling twice in a personal-best time of 2:09.42, which moved her into the No. 4 spot on the school’s all-time performers list. Sophomore Rebecca Crain was the runner-up in a pr 2:16.53, while James was third in 2:18.71.

James took top honors in the metric mile with a season-best 4:44.71, while Miller led a 1-2-4 finish in the 400m with a season-best 55.23. Junior Shavonne Armbrister was second in 56.81 and freshman Marissa Cooksey was fourth in 59.20, both season bests.

Edwards had the other individual win for the Roadrunners, leaping to an 18-10 measure on her final attempt in the long jump. Fellow freshman Eboni Johnson was third with an 18-0 ¼ mark.

The 1,600m relay team cruised to gold in 3:50.58 for the other win, while the 400m relay was second in a season-best 47.60.

In other track action, senior Pernilla Savestrand and sophomore Courtney Nelson placed second (11:55.62) and third (12:29.14), respectively, in the 3,000m steeplechase, while freshman Nicole Washington raced to a third-place time of 12.42 in the 100m.

In the field, freshman Brooke Townzen finished second in the javelin with a season-best throw of 117-3 and third in the pole vault with an 11-1 ¾ clearance. Junior Taelor Wilson was second in the hammer with a personal-best throw of 153-3, while freshman Jaimee Bennett was second in the discus with a 137-10 measure and third in the hammer with a 142-2 throw. Freshman Stacia Newton was runner-up in the shot put with a 41-9 ¾ mark and junior Rebekah Hill was third in the triple jump with a season-best 38-0 skip.

The Roadrunners return to the track next week when they compete in the Mt. SAC Relays on April 14-16 and the Trinity Tigers Twilight on April 16.
