SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 7-0 home setback against Nicholls on Saturday.
The Roadrunners finished the spring with a 4-16 overall record and 1-10 mark in Southland Conference play. Meanwhile, the Colonels improved their season ledger to 13-8 (4-7 SLC).
Nicholls swept all three doubles matches for the early 1-0 lead.
Melissa Harrison and Tatiana Denezhkina dealt freshmen Mariel Maffezzolli and Kavya Menon an 8-5 loss at the No. 2 position. The tandem of Florina Nosca and Natatia Zamora then clinched the point with an 8-6 victory over sophomore Micaela Silva and freshman Vivian Carrillo at the top spot. Sumana Kalyanasundarm and Sanja Stanojcic held on for the 8-7 victory against junior Caroline Dedering and sophomore Katie Ottenbreit at No. 3.
The Colonels kept the momentum going into singles play and won all six matches in straight sets.
Nosca pushed Nicholls’ lead to two with her 6-4, 6-1 win against Silva at the No. 1 slot. Stanojcic then gave the Colonels a commanding 3-0 advantage after she handed Ottenbreit a straight-sets loss (6-2, 6-4) at No. 5. Zamora secured the match with her 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 2.
