Roadrunners drop first Southland Conference match of season on Saturday

CORPUS CHRISTI —  The UTSA men’s tennis team dropped its first Southland Conference match of the season in a 6-1 loss at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.

The Roadrunners saw their record drop to 11-8 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Islanders upped their mark to 9-13 (3-1 SLC).

The Birds jumped on top early after winning two of the three doubles matches.

A&M-Corpus Christi was victorious at the No. 1 position when Dmitry Novikov and James Langford cruised past junior Rodrigo Morgado and sophomore Pedro Zanotelli with an 8-2 win. However, UTSA fought back at the Nos. 2 and 3 slots to secure the point. Freshman Martin Ayala and junior Daniel Moreiras posted an 8-5 win at No. 3 and freshman Tyler Brown and junior Max Stratmann then dropped Alex Pavlov and Robert Raguz by the same score at the No. 2 spot.

The Islanders then won all six singles matches to clinch the match.

Pavlov tied the match at one with his 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4. AMCC took a 2-1 lead after Duje Janjic outlasted Moreiras 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 position. Novikov and Raguz then gave the Islanders the victory at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively.

UTSA plays its regular season finale against UT Arlington at noon on Monday.
