Valerio wins Husky Invitational, UTSA finishes second

Freshman Paola Valerio became the third individual medalist in program history on Tuesday.

MISSOURI CITY – Freshman Paola Valerio fired a final-round 75 on Tuesday at the Husky Invitational and she collected the first individual medal of her career with a final scorecard of 224 (76-73-75).

The Mexico City native, who entered the final 18 holes two shots behind Sam Houston State’s Shelby Hardy, posted the top round of the day and claimed her inaugural title in just the third start of her young career. She became just the third Roadrunner in the program's five-year history to win an individual crown.

UTSA shot a final-round 312 and finished in second place in the team standings with a three-round total of 929. Tournament host Houston Baptist edged the Roadrunnners by onlytwo strokes to win the team championship.

Senior Shelly Martinez placed fourth with her three-round tally of 232 (78-76-78), while sophomore Bruna Spengler registered scores of 75-80-81 (236) to finish in a ninth-place tie.

UTSA returns to action on April 12 at the two-day Baylor Invitational in Waco.
